- Instructions for using A.P.D.L. !PCOrder program
- ==================================================
-
-
- This program is similar to the !Order program used to order other items
- but it is intended to make it easy for you to order PC 'ZIP' files. It
- can be used either on its own or to add a selection of PC files to an
- order for other discs created using the !Order program.
-
- IMPORTANT - As most people don't just want ZIP files this program takes
- no account of the £1 surcharge for orders outside Europe. If you are
- from outside Europe and are not ordering other items please add £1 to
- the total shown.
-
-
- Using !PCOrder
- --------------
- Basically all you need to do is load the !PCOrder application. It
- requires ArcFS to be loaded and it not it will complain and refuse to
- start. !PCOrder expects to find an ArcFS archive with a name beginning
- with 'PC_' in the same drive and directory as the program. This archive
- can contain many text files and these are lists of the individual PC
- 'ZIP' files with their prices and a short description. The must conform
- to the specific format required by !PCOrder.
-
- If !PCOrder can't find an archive with a name beginning with PC_ it will
- open an error window to tell you. If you click on 'OK' the program will
- be started with no data file. If you do this you can subsequently drag
- an archive containing appropriate files to the PCOrder icon and these
- will be loaded.
-
- Once the program has loaded some data files a window will open with
- icons showing you how many items you have ordered (obviously nothing
- yet) and the total cost. If you close this window at any time then
- clicking SELECT on the PCOrder icon will reopen it. There will also be a
- second, small, window which shows the names of the files you have
- selected. Again at first this will be blank. If you close this window
- then clicking ADJUST on the PCOrder icon will reopen it.
-
- At the top of the main window are two icons marked 'Use HD (1.44 Mb)'
- and 'Invoice'. If you want your order on high density discs then select
- 'Use HD'. This will be done automatically if the program detects that
- you have a HD drive, so if this is the case but you DON'T want your
- selection on HD discs you will need to de-select this.
-
- If you are NOT sending payment with your order then select 'Invoice'.
- The minimum charge will then rise to £5. If you are ordering discs from
- other parts of the catalogue using the !Order program then DON'T select
- 'Invoice' here but select it from within the !Order program, otherwise
- you may be paying more than necessary.
-
- At the bottom are a series of large 'buttons', each corresponding to a
- file which makes up a part of the catalogue. If you click on one of
- these it will be loaded and a window will open displaying that file. On
- the left is the name of the actual file. This might be a bit cryptic
- as DOS limits it to only eight letters but it may have some numerals
- which represent a version number. After the filename is the price in
- pence for that file. After this comes a short description. This may be
- just a few words on a single line or a short paragraph.
-
- To select an item you want double-click on the file code or anywhere in
- the text which describes that file. As you select an item it's price
- will be added to the running total and the name of the file, it's price,
- and the section of the catalogue in which it appeared will be added to
- the list of those selected. Obviously until the total cost of your
- selection exceeds the minimum cost of your order the total cost won't
- increase.
-
- If you change your mind and decide you don't want a file double-click on
- it on the list of files already selected. If you do this the filename
- won't be removed from the list but it will be shown in pale grey and
- it's price will be deducted from the total. Any 'deselected' files are
- ignored when the order is printed or Saved. If you change your mind
- again and want to include a deselected file just double-click on the
- filename and it will be selected again. DON'T double click on it again
- in the main window or it will be selected TWICE.
-
-
- Searching
- ---------
- If you want to search for a particular file or 'keyword' then
- double-click ADJUST anywhere in the viewing window or select 'Search'
- from the Menu and a 'Search' window will appear. Enter the text you are
- looking for and press RETURN or click on 'OK'. All searches operate
- forwards from the file at the top of the window and are not case
- sensitive. The '#' (hash) character is used as a wildcard and matches
- any character.
-
- There are two buttons 'Name only' and 'Anywhere' in the Search window.
- If 'Name only' is selected then only the actual filenames will be matched
- against the text you have entered. This is useful if you are searching
- for a particular file (for example, if you have selected a file and then
- can't remember what the program actually is!). If 'Anywhere' is selected
- then all text, the filenames and the descriptions, will be searched.
- This could be used to look for a particular 'keyword' which might help
- identify some special type of program.
-
- When a match is found the window will be redrawn with the file in which
- it was found at the top of the window. To find the next match just click
- on 'OK'. If no match is found then the program will just 'beep'.
-
-
- Name and Address
- ----------------
- If you click MENU on the main or viewing window a menu will appear. The
- items on this are -
-
- Search
- Address
- Print order
- Recalculate
- Clear all
- Compact
- Sort list
- Save order
- Save text
-
- Search has previously been described.
-
- If you click on 'Address' a window will open in which you can enter your
- name and address. You can also get to this window from the icon bar menu
-
- If you want to order by Credit Card then you should enter your card
- number and expiry date in the Address Window. If you do this you MUST
- sign your printed order or, if you send your order on disc, you should
- include a short, SIGNED, note authorising us to debit your card.
-
- 'Recalculate' will completely recalculate the cost of your order. You
- shouldn't need to do this but if you want to make sure that the program
- hasn't 'forgotten' to deduct a deselected item you can do so.
-
- 'Clear selec(tion)' will completely wipe out everything you have chosen.
-
- 'Print order' will send your order to the printer. The printing isn't
- particularly fancy and is really intended for a dot matrix or other
- simple printer. If you want a 'fancy' output there is an alternative.
-
- 'Compact' will delete from the list any files which you have de-selected
- and which are shown feint.
-
- 'Sort list' sorts the selected files into alphabetical order. This also
- deletes any duplicate selections that you might have inadvertently made,
- and any de-selected items will be moved to the end of the list where
- they can be more readily seen. If any duplicate files are deleted this
- will be reported and the price adjusted. The file will automatically be
- sorted and any duplicates removed before it is printed or saved, but
- when this is done the removal of duplicates will NOT be reported. All
- iems are sorted firstly by the name of the file from which they ware
- taken and then by the ID number and filename. This automatically groups
- items taken from the same file together.
-
- If you put the mouse pointer on 'Save text' and slide it to the right a
- 'Save' window will appear. Just drag the icon in this to a suitable
- directory viewer and your selection will be saved as a plain text file.
- As this is almost identical to the way your order will be printed it is
- probably a good idea to do this and load it into !Edit to check before
- printing as well to check that you haven't forgotten anything.
-
- Before your order is printed or saved as a text file a window will open
- showing the name and address you have entered (or blank if you have
- forgotten to enter it). If all is correct click on 'OK', if you have
- forgotten your name and address or it is incorrect click on 'Cancel' and
- you can then open the 'Address' window and correct it. If you are also
- ordering items using the !Order program then you may not want to bother
- filling in your name and address as it will already appear on the main
- order. In this case you can just leave it blank.
-
- You could also load the text file into a wordprocessor or DTP program if
- you wish to make it more exotic.
-
- As well as saving your order as a text file 'Save order' will save it in
- a form which can be reloaded into !PCOrder. You can do this if you want
- to stop before you have completed your order and continue later. In fact
- you can't actually reload a file into !PCOrder while it's running, you
- must double-click on the order file and !PCOrder will start up with your
- order loaded.
-
-
- Combining PC files and other items
- ----------------------------------
- If you intend to order items from other parts of the catalogue using
- the !Order program then you can combine the two files. To do this just
- Save your selection made with !PCOrder (NOT as a text file). Now start
- the !Order program and drag the file saved from !PCOrder to the the
- !Order icon on the iconbar. A window will open confirming that the file
- has been accepted. The cost of this will not be shown in the !Order
- program's window at this time but when you print or save your order as a
- text file it will be included.
-
- If you select 'Clear' from the !Order menu then the PC file will also be
- cleared so you will have to reload it.
-
- If you send your order on disc (I suggest putting it on your catalogue
- disc which I can then update and return to you). Send it as a text file
- and NOT as a PCOrder file. Please don't just put the disc in a normal
- envelope. Use a 'jiffy' bag or some other protective packaging. Please
- also include your name and address on a sheet of paper as well as on the
- disc. Sometimes discs get damaged in the post and if this happens then I
- will be able to tell you. If I can't read the disc for any reason and
- you haven't included your name and address elsewhere then there's not
- much I can do, so you will wait forever for your order unjustly blaming
- APDL or the Post Office.
-
- Don't just write it on the back of the envelope. By the time I look at
- the disc I will probably have a pile of empty envelopes and it may not
- be possible to work out which your disc came in.
-
-
- Use with more than one source archive
- -------------------------------------
- !PCOrder always tries to load a single ArcFS archive called PC_* for
- it's source files. As well as the main archive I may supply additional
- archives with more programs. If you have a copy of the full (read/write)
- version of ArcFS you could add these files to the main archive, but if
- you don't, or if there isn't room on the disc for a larger file and you
- don't have a hard disc, then !PCOrder can use several source archives
- although only one archive can be 'active' at once
-
- Make your selection from the first archive in the usual way. Now drag a
- new archive to the PCOrder icon. The program will continue just as
- before with the same files selected but now the 'buttons' in the main
- window will show the files in the new archive. You can make your
- selection and this will be added to the list already chosen. If
- necessary you can then repeat the operation with a further archive.
-
-
- Printing
- --------
- The printing method used by !PCOrder is very simple. It doesn't use the
- RiscOS Printer Drivers but sends text directly to the printer. This
- method was chosen for speed and simplicity and so people who only have
- a simple dot matrix printer don't have to wait ages for hardcopy. This
- might mean your order is a bit 'plain' but if you do want to make it
- more 'pretty' you can always load the text into a DTP package and do so.
-
- There are a couple of problems which can appear when this method is used
- if your printer and/or computer aren't configured properly. These may
- not appear if you normally use Printer Drivers but they will show up if
- 'direct' printing is used and should be corrected or you may have
- problems with other programs.
-
- The most likely problem is that all text is double-spaced with a blank
- line between each line of text. This is caused by your printer being
- incorrectly configured. You must set the printer to 'Line feeds from
- host'. This is usually done by setting a DIL switch somewhere on the
- printer and you will have to refer to the printer's manual to find out
- how to do this. If you really can't work out how to do this (or don't
- want to for some other reason) then click on 'Linefeed' on the main
- menu so that it isn't 'ticked'. Linefeeds will NOT then be sent to the
- printer at the end of each line to make sure that it is not double
- spaced. Alternatively if you hold down the right hand ALT and the LEFT
- ARROW keys (both together) when you double-click on !Order to start the
- program then no line feeds will be sent. If you do this and your printer
- is correctly configured then everything will be printed on one line.
-
- If you do choose to use fancy fonts to print your order PLEASE be
- careful which styles you choose. People often send me beautifully printed
- orders but have used fonts which are completely unsuitable for printing
- disc code numbers. It might not look so nice but a plain, simple, font
- makes your order easy to read and is less likely to lead to mistakes.
- For the same reason please don't use anything too fancy for your
- address. Sometimes people put there name and address in beautiful italic
- script which makes the postcode impossible to read!
-
- You may notice that when an order is printed your name and address
- appears at the bottom as well as at the top. The reason for the
- duplication is that I cut out the second one and use it as a return
- label to eliminate the possibility of mistakes.
